Woman Fires at Returning Robber
Warren, Ohio – A mother returning to her home on Willard Ave. needed her concealed carry gun to protect herself from a robber on Monday morning.
The 40-year-old woman told the Tribune Chronicle that she had just pulled into her detached car garage at around 11:50 a.m. when a man wearing a red shirt and tan pants walked up behind her.
Fearing a potentially dangerous threat, the victim pulled the handgun she is licensed to carry concealed and ordered him to stop, but the suspect ignored her and instead tried to steal her purse. They struggled for a moment before he reached over and punched her in the face.
After that, he turned and ran down the driveway and away from his intended target. The victim then walked into the backyard to call the police, but as she waited for help to come, the man returned.
She again pointed her gun at him and ordered him not to come any closer or she would shoot but the man ignored her, prompting her to fire at him. This time, the suspect turned and fled before police were able to arrive at the home, and there have been no reports of anyone arrested for the crime.
The woman said she doesn’t think she hit the man, but reported she stopped firing as soon as he turned and ran because her concealed carry training had instructed her not to shoot someone running away.
The victim went on to say she’s glad she had the gun on her to defend herself,
“I never thought I’d have to use it,” she said. “But I’m glad I had it to protect myself because I had no idea what was going on in his head at the time. I never thought he’d come back the second time, knowing I had a gun with me.”
The victim, who’s left side of her face is bruised from the punch thrown by the suspect, said,
“I’m still a little shook up, but I’m OK. I’m just thankful my kids were not home.”
One thing that might have led to a less risky encounter would be to go inside and make sure the doors are locked after the robber left the first time instead of staying outside where he could find you. This puts a barrier between you and the threat and increases the amount of time it will take for them to get to you.
Overall, however, the woman did an amazing job of protecting herself and a prime example of the benefit of training.
